Riverside International Raceway in Southern California opened in 1957 and quickly established itself as a difficult course to navigate. The 3.3 mile track featured a long down-hill back straight followed by a tight 180-degree Turn 9 which became notorious for destroying brakes. For 32 years the track hosted numerous racing series such as NASCAR, Formula One, Indy Car, IMSA, USAC and NHRA. The track closed in 1989, and the land upon which it was built was redeveloped into a shopping mall and housing. Riverside International Raceway's legacy lives on nearby at the Riverside International Automotive Museum.
