The 1968 film 'Bullitt' was directed by Peter Yates and starred Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, and Jacqueline Bisset. McQueen plays the part of San Francisco Police Lieutenant Frank Bullitt, whose job is to protect a witness to organized crime. Vaughn portrays politician Walter Chalmers who plans to conduct an open hearing on organized crime and whose success hinges on the protection and testimony of the witness. Bisset plays the part of Frank's girlfriend, Cathy.
The film is best known for its legendary car chase on the streets of San Francisco. At the time, it was the greatest car chase ever committed to celluloid, and it became the benchmark against which all future car chases on TV and film would be judged. In the film, Frank Bullitt - driving a Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT - is being followed by two hitmen in a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T. Bullitt manages to turn the table and chase after the hitmen, leading to a dramatic conclusion.
'Bullitt' did well at the box-office and among critics. At the 1969 Academy Awards, it earned an Oscar for Best Film Editing and a nomination for Best Sound. In 2007, the film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress' National Film Registry.
